Performance in the Silverado 1500 starts with its engines -- and there is quite a collection to consider. The base 4.3-liter V6 engine is good for 305 horsepower and 285 pound-feet of torque. Connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, the V6 is a sturdy workhorse of an engine that's at home in any situation. The newest addition to the Silverado 1500 engine lineup is the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Defying convention, this engine makes 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque from a small, efficient package.

A pair of V8 engines are available as well. The highly respected 5.3-liter V8 remains, this time connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. With 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, this V8 is as well-rounded and durable as they come. The crown jewel of the group is the 6.2-liter V8. Bearing 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, this engine is the most powerful in the lineup and allows for the highest towing and payload capacities.
