While our world continues to change, one thing that always seems to stay the same is the timeless charm of our historic Canal Fulton!
Our small city was formed on May 16, 1826 as a small village that would go on to grow into the city we know and love. Other small communities would join together to officially bring the modern Canal Fulton in 1853; however, the most significant addition to our community, our lovely canal, would be finished earlier, in 1832.
As part of the larger Ohio and Erie Canal, our historic waterway has provided leisure and charm for centuries. Stark County became known nationwide for its endless influence on national trade. When the price of wheat and other goods shipped through the canal saw large increases, Canal Fulton only grew in importance. The canal dictates life here, where even our streets ignore the cardinal directions typical of other cities and follow the route of the canal.
Eventually, the industrious city we know today would diversify, becoming a well-known agricultural and mining hub. From the post office to the craftsman and farmers, Canal Fulton had everything a contemporary city needed.
Today, we honor the heritage that previous generations of our city passed down. The canal is still flooded, with a replica canal boat, the St. Helena III, navigating the way throughout the summer.
